Let me tell you a story about Carole.  She was a cute, outgoing, perky little girl who thought everyone was happy, for she found life to be satisfying and fun.  Then at age 10 her parents got a divorce, and all hell broke loose in her perfect world.  Life at home became strained and uncomfortable, and as she was shoved from one parent to the other she began to feel unloved.  She also carried enormous guilt because she believed all the confusion was her fault.

My mother lifted a piece of lettuce on her plate and we discovered she had been given a bit of extra protein with her steak, in the form of a very well done cockroach.

After my initial reaction of pure horror, my mother waved to the maître d'. She showed him the cockroach. The management apologized profusely, and made it clear the restaurant would take care of it.

Remember the adage, "Women have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good"? Dr. Lois Frankel writes in her bestseller, Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, "It's a myth that people get ahead because they work hard. The truth is, no one ever got promoted purely because of hard work. Likability, strategic thinking, networking, being a team player are but a few of the other factors that go into crafting a successful career."

The other night at 9:30, the temperature here in Dallas was 100 degrees. We’ve been setting records all summer for the highest low temperature in a day and the most triple digit temperature days.

In 2009, I began having health problems. I refer to the episode as my "double whammy!" I had been feeling very fatigued all the time, falling asleep around 3 or 4 PM daily, feeling faint upon standing and almost falling asleep while driving a couple of times. I chalked it up to burning the candle at both ends and shrugged it off...I know...insane, right?

Many people have spent the last 2 years working even harder but for less return and recognition. They think they can't move on because another opportunity may not be out there, or fear what they're doing won't provide the level of income.

Their confidence has taken a big hit during these times. Yet some people seem to be doing better than ever. You may wonder "why does it look so easy for them"?

The foundation of their success is confidence.

When my brain fog and unreliable memory got to be too much for me and my friends and family, I went to a doctor who gave me some hope and a book. This book, The Ultra Mind Solution -- Fix your broken brain by healing your body first: The simple way to defeat depression, overcome anxiety, and sharpen your mind, answered a lot of questions my shaky brain hadn't even come up with.

I used to wake up with a nagging sense of guilt and shame that I forgotten to do something or had left some stone unturned that needed my immediate attention. Did I forget to pick up my son at school, floss my teeth, write that overdue thank you note?

Two incidents, same suggestion - "Let it go." The first situation was in my yoga class. As we were lying on our mats, deeply breathing in and out, our instructor said, "Breathe in light, energy, abundance, and joy." That's a nice image. Then she said, "Breathe out anything that you need to let go of." That's another nice image. But how do we really do this?

If you Google the word "happiness" a resounding 72,800,000 results come up. Not surprising.

I think we are all too aware that our culture is fascinated, and let's be honest, inundated with the concept of happiness.

Last October I went to Palo Alto, CA for my husband Ken's business school reunion. The trip allowed me to visit two friends from Octel Communications, both of whom have children at Gunn High School. Both hit me with the same news: four children from Gunn had killed themselves since the beginning of the school year.

There are times when we all feel fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt.

We wouldn't be humans if we didn't experience these feelings.

However, what so often happens is that fear and unresolved trauma unconsciously become the guiding forces that derail us from living life to our fullest potential.

I once heard someone say that she was very sorry for all the other girls who lost out on her man. Turns out she need not have worried. According to Dr. Helen Fisher, Biological Anthropologist at Rutgers University and chief advisor to the website Chemistry.com, we are not programmed to want to be with the same type of person - we all have our partner types.

Our life expectancy has doubled in the last century. We need brains robust enough to match our bodies' new life span. Dr. Sandy Chapman focused on the importance of brain care at a recent session of the UTD Center for Brain Health lecture series. We can't neglect our brains' health.
