Once a Portuguese trading colony, Macau is now Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It's become the gambling capital of the world, exceeding Las Vegas in gambling revenues since 2006, and growing rapidly ever since.

"Look dolphins" squealed my six year-old nephew.  Following his excited goggle, I too saw eight, maybe ten, dolphins arching high in the aquamarine waters of the South Pacific, less than a mile from the Hanalei Bay, off  Kauai's North Shore.  We had already spotted a three foot sea turtle and now dolphins.

Ever since my husband, Lynn, retired, he has talked about us sailing around the world. I've managed to put it off for a variety of reasons: I get seasick, it would take too long, I get seasick, it would cost too much. Oh, and did I mention that I get seasick?

My son is about to depart on the trip of a lifetime. He will be trekking on China's northern Silk Road for a month with a group of students from his high school. During the past few months, we have received many e-mails from the trip organizer giving us information about China's politics, culture, and history.
