Stephen Pyles has opened several restaurants in the Dallas area over the past 25-plus years, winning several awards, but his restaurant carrying his name is our favorite. Located at 1807 Ross Avenue at St. Paul Street, it's in the heart of the Arts District in Dallas.

The Little Owl at 90 Bedford Street in the West Village is a restaurant success story. A small place with excellent service and terrific food in a charming space-the owners make everything appear so simple that you may be tempted to launch your own little cafe. But wait, there's some magic going on here. Service has just the right balance of warmth and city cool and the menu has been honed to a small but wide selection of great dishes.

French food is tricky. Too often it's overdone: over-sauced, over-cute, over-small. But when it's done right, there's no more satisfying meal. Le Gigot, a tiny place in New York's Greenwich Village does French bistro food just right.

Tucked under the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge, at 279 Water Street, is a small red brick building that has been sitting there since 1794. The oldest serving tavern in New York City, it's been a food and beer shop, a restaurant, a pirate bar and a brothel. It hasn't been a brothel for a while now. In 1979, a young couple purchased the building, remodeled the space and opened the Bridge Café.

Only an hour and a half away from Dallas and Ft Worth, the fifties live! Granbury's Rinky-Tink's Old Fashion Ice Cream Parlor & Sandwich Shop located right on the town square, has been serving burgers, fries and shakes for 30 years.

Diner is an old fashioned diner car made into a very hip Brooklyn place. No reservations. No menus, just a handwritten list of beautifully conceived and well-executed dishes. You know how hard it is if you don't eat beef to find a main course that sounds like something you really want? They always have a fish and a chicken dish that I have to seriously deliberate over.
Boatyard bar and grill

We may have missed the opportunity to dine with Michelle and Sasha Obama by going to the Boatyard Bar and Grill 2 days too late, but we didn't miss the chance for great seafood.

I've tried before to get a Duck Boat tour of Boston, and on my last trip to Beantown I finally had the opportunity to do so.
Spadari 1

Milan thrives on art and design. Nowhere is that more evident than at the Hotel Spadari al Duomo. Located about ten yards from the Duomo plaza, the Spadari is sleek on the outside and stylish on the inside. Original work of contemporary young artists is everywhere-from the lobby to the comfortable rooms. We had difficulty deciding on our favorite pieces on our recent stay there.

A trip to Maui for us is never complete without a stop at Mama's Fish House. Located approximately 1 ½ miles out of Paia on the road to Hana, it's a bit out of the way from the main island resorts.

My husband often travels to San Francisco on business. A few years ago when his favorite Italian restaurant there closed, he mourned. My kids and I were relieved when he found a new place he liked even more. This new restaurant, he told us, was so good that he had begun staying at the hotel attached to it.
stinking rose
Monday, April 11th, 2011
Since 1995, The Stinking Rose restaurant in LA has served up delightful meals that rely heavily on one ingredient: garlic. Whether it's 40-clove garlic chicken where the name warns of the potential garlicky-ness or the filet mignon that sounds innocent, but packs a big garlic punch, you will find the stinky rose in every dish they serve. Garlic has been called the stinky rose since antiquity, but no one knows why as the garlic plant is in the lily family, and not related to roses at all.

Several years ago when Veronica Vellines was an attorney working in Munich, her husband Johnny was a student of Europe's boutique bieres. In the late 1990's they relocated to New York and he used the knowledge he'd gained in Germany working for a beer distributor.

It was 6:30 in the morning. I had just landed at Miami International Airport after flying all night, and was looking for a cup of good coffee to wake me up. As I turned the corner, a glassed in exhibit space caught my attention. Written on the glass were the words: "What do you wear that makes you feel powerful?"

There's nothing better than a fabulous dinner with wonderful friends. That is how we feel when we dine at Cache Cache in Aspen, Colorado. It's a favorite of locals and visiting celebrities alike. We first ate at Cache Cache 9 years ago when we were looking at buying a vacation home in the area. It's been a favorite ever since.
