Maximilien Sunset

A long weekend in Seattle allowed me the opportunity to sample some of the city's great dining options.  An added bonus  - halibut season had just begun - so all restaurants had special dishes to feature the fish on their menu.

The original Ivar's location opened in 1938.  On the Seattle waterfront, the location was an easy walk from our hotel.  The ambience is classic charm and history without being tired and worn out.  The clam chowder is excellent - perhaps the best I've ever tasted.  A salad prepared with blood oranges from the in-season menu was amazing. The halibut special was prepared wrapped in bacon - a little heavy for me - so I ordered the pacific salmon, which was perfectly paired with cauliflower puree and snap peas

Steelhead Diner: Lively, hip and family friendly.  Near Pike's Place they offer a creative menu that includes fish tacos and fish and chips.  Their preparation of the in-season halibut was light and delicious.  They have an extensive list of Washington State and Oregon wines.

Maximillien:  This classic French restaurant is a great place to watch the sun set - it is on Forbes list of the top 10 restaurants to see the sun dip over the horizon.  The restaurant is located right in the heart of Pike's Place.  The setting is small and charming; every seat in the house has a good view of the water and the sunset.  The menu is classic French food - I selected 'Le Gourmand" Tasting menu which includes: escargot cooked in garlic and parsley butter, fresh pan seared halibut and Crème brûlée.  The wine list is predominately French wines.  Despite the formality of the food, the atmosphere is casual, relaxed and they don't have a dress code.

On our last day the weather was glorious, a walk along the waterfront led us to Anthony's Pier 66.  A table on the balcony offered views of the waterfront, the Seattle skyline and Mount Rainier - stunning!  The sunset view was slightly obstructed, but still very nice.  We arrived on the first night of Seattle's restaurant week, so opted to choose one of the fixed menu options that included Hawaiian Ahi Nachos and Fresh Pacific Ahi with fresh ginger sauce, pineapple chutney and crispy ginger slaw.  The nachos were very nice!
