It's official. A beautiful woman has the power to turn men's brains to mush.  A psychologist in the Netherlands initiated a study after talking to a stunning woman reduced him to such a state that he couldn't tell her his home address. Results of the study proved just what he suspected: men use so much of their brain function trying to impress beautiful women that they have little left over for other tasks.

Young heterosexual male volunteers took brain function tests after conversations with beautiful women. Results showed that after even a few minutes spent chatting with attractive women, the men's ability to process streams of letters slowed and was less accurate.  When the tests were administered again, after the men conversed with women they didn't find attractive, the scores improved.

Women, on the other hand, are not affected by conversations with attractive men. Women's scores stayed about the same whether conversing with man or woman, attractive or not. The researchers conclude that men are programmed to think about ways to pass on their genes. While men are reproductively focused, women are looking for things not easily seen in a first meeting: indications of wealth, youth and kindness.

The researchers stated in a report on their findings: '... men's cognitive functioning may temporarily decline after an interaction with an attractive woman.' Suppose you're not a woman whose looks turn men's minds to mush with a single smile, yet you want to increase your power. The simple answer is to wear red.

A study at the University of Rochester confirmed red as the color of love. Men shown photos of the same women found her more attractive in a red frame than blue, gray or green. If the researchers used a computer to change a woman's shirt from blue to red, men found the same woman in the same photo more attractive in the red shirt.

While the preference for red may come from society's association of red and love for generations, it's more likely a biological response. Scientists have shown that male higher primates are more attracted to females of their species when they display red.

Women, again on the other hand, were not affected by color in determining attractiveness. Gay and color blind men were not included in the study.

When male college students say they'll spend more of the $100 researchers gave them on a date with a woman in red than in another color, they're probably responding at a base biological level. Work with that information and pull out your best red dress when the stakes are really high.

Can't get past those Louboutins!

No wonder my husband doesn't remember what he heard at a conference we attended together today. Seated across from both of us was a comely young woman with the soles (red, of course) of her Louboutins turned toward us. When we left the seminar, I asked, "so, what did you think?" "Uh," he stammered, "I really like those red soles." "Hmmm," I pushed, "give me your credit card!" Mild resistance. He has no clue what they cost, but if I wear them around the house with lingerie, he probably won't remember.

Good to know!

I have often wondered why many men think women have a mysterious power over them. If their brains turn to mush when they are interacting with a beautiful woman it's no wonder they think the culprit is the woman. It's actually their own chemistry pulling their brain power away from rational thought. That's good to know!

People may not remember the origin of blue jeans, but no one can forget James Dean strutting across the big screen sporting jeans, white t shirt and black leather jacket in Rebel Without a Cause.  Other heartthrobs such as Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley sporting those sexy denims helped spawn jeans' popularity in the 1950's. After generations of being considered sturdy work clothes worn by factory workers and miners, they became part of the off-duty American wardrobe.  Considered controversial and rebellious, some establishments banned them.

Yes, it's true. Most experts agree that Fortune Cookies are another great American invention. These thin, crisp cookies, folded so that a slip of paper with a fortune can be placed inside, are probably not even Chinese. There is much debate over the origin of these tiny treats, but in the U.S.A., they have become a staple dessert in Chinese cuisine.

Last October I went to Palo Alto, CA for my husband Ken's business school reunion. The trip allowed me to visit two friends from Octel Communications, both of whom have children at Gunn High School. Both hit me with the same news: four children from Gunn had killed themselves since the beginning of the school year.
