sanberg and test tubes
Saturday, March 6th, 2010
Paul Sanberg may be the guy who unseats Juan Ponce de Leon when we think of the fountain of youth. His work with stem cells and cord blood is poised to revolutionize brain health and repair.

Last October I went to Palo Alto, CA for my husband Ken's business school reunion. The trip allowed me to visit two friends from Octel Communications, both of whom have children at Gunn High School. Both hit me with the same news: four children from Gunn had killed themselves since the beginning of the school year.

There are times when we all feel fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt.

We wouldn't be humans if we didn't experience these feelings.

However, what so often happens is that fear and unresolved trauma unconsciously become the guiding forces that derail us from living life to our fullest potential.

In this short, easily readable book T. R. Reid, a Washington Post correspondent who has lived in England and Japan and traveled widely,  compares the health care systems in several countries as he asks why the United States has so far been unable to deal with reforming our system.

I once heard someone say that she was very sorry for all the other girls who lost out on her man. Turns out she need not have worried. According to Dr. Helen Fisher, Biological Anthropologist at Rutgers University and chief advisor to the website Chemistry.com, we are not programmed to want to be with the same type of person - we all have our partner types.

Our life expectancy has doubled in the last century. We need brains robust enough to match our bodies' new life span. Dr. Sandy Chapman focused on the importance of brain care at a recent session of the UTD Center for Brain Health lecture series. We can't neglect our brains' health.

The notion of a hardwired brain can be a handy excuse. The brain can be blamed for a lot that would otherwise be seen as lack of initiative. Well, watch out fellow procrastinators, Norman Doidge is in town to set the record straight. Actually he was in town last week, and I was lucky enough to get a ticket to hear him at the University of Texas - Dallas Center for Brain Health's annual lecture series called The Brain: An Owner's Guide.

The Center for Brain Health at UT-Dallas recommends stretching your mental limits on a daily basis to build new brain connections and strengthen existing ones:

Judy: Amy and Karla started the new year with a tap of the reset button. They went back to the toughest and most restrictive version of the elimination diet to verify their assumptions. They've zeroed in on several foods that affect the way they feel and sleep.

When Karla brought in a brochure and asked if any of us would consider a "brain physical," I jumped at the chance.

Most of us remember our mothers touting the adage "You are what you eat." My parents ate healthfully long before lean meats and greens became fashionable. Dad exercised with military discipline. They also threw great parties, with delectable appetizers and plenty to drink. Their example left an indelible mark.

I do not have a green thumb. Any plant that enters my house better have its affairs in order because it's going down. It may be quick and painless as is the experience of any orchid I get or it may be a slow painful death as that suffered by my zee zee plant, which Julie England says is practically impossible to kill. Outside plants fare no better. The one exception to this mass slaughter is rosemary.

The reason I haven’t written this book about staying healthy is that it would only be 6 words. The dedication would be much longer – there are many role models and mentors who have taught me in principle and action that these 6 words prove the point.

You know lots of lucky dandelions. They are dealt the worst hand in Poker, yet still feel like a winner. With cups that appear half full, they find nourishment in the sidewalk cracks of life. Regardless of the balance in their bank accounts, evening news stories, report cards, or career setbacks, dandelions thrive.
Elim Diet week 10
Sunday, January 3rd, 2010
Karla and Amy: We were both traveling last week and it was tough! Restaurants for all meals is a hard way to stay on any diet and especially the Elimination Diet.

The dream of a long, healthy life isn't a new one: Juan Ponce de Leon was not the first with his search for the fountain of youth, but today we seem more confident that using science and epidemiological studies we can find the secret.
Elim Diet Week 9
Saturday, December 26th, 2009
Judy: This holiday season Amy and Karla have chosen to be spectators in the eating frenzy that grips almost all of us. They’re both so intent on the goal of feeling better that they make the determination to hold firm seem easy.
Santa
Thursday, December 24th, 2009
Those pudgy cheeks, that cherry red nose, the belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly: Santa looks cute, but he serves as a good reminder in this season that we need to watch growing mid-sections. Before modern marketing folks got hold of him, Santa was a thin, ascetic fellow in long fur-trimmed robes, and probably a lot healthier. Today's Santa, and others with bellies that shake when they laugh, are more prone to disease than our also large, but pear-shaped friends.
Elim diet week 8
Friday, December 18th, 2009

Judy: Holiday stress and hectic schedules have introduced some challenges, but Amy and Karla continue to pursue their goals. This week highlights the importance of eating pure foods so you know what you're getting during an elimination diet, and taking it easy so you remember to exercise, take your vitamins, and drink plenty of water. Amy and Karla have had to work doubly hard to make this elimination diet work with their busy lives. I am amazed at and delighted with their progress.
