closed fortune cookie
Friday, March 5th, 2010
Yes, it's true. Most experts agree that Fortune Cookies are another great American invention. These thin, crisp cookies, folded so that a slip of paper with a fortune can be placed inside, are probably not even Chinese. There is much debate over the origin of these tiny treats, but in the U.S.A., they have become a staple dessert in Chinese cuisine.

Andrée Putman, the acclaimed French designer and interior architect, once said, "I love America, and I love American women, but there is one thing that deeply shocks me......American closets. I cannot believe one can dress well when you have so much."
levi's

Most of us think of blue jeans, or denim pants, as truly American. Levi's® certainly are, but denim fabric was used long before 1776.  In the 1600's a cloth called "dungaree" was being made in India, and was imported to Europe by Portuguese sailors who wore pants made from this material while sailing.

Dig out that fabulous red dress. Pull on those red cowboy boots. Grab that flashy red leather jacket. Today, February 5, 2010, is National Wear Red Day®. It's not just for Valentine's Day anymore. I may not look like Christina Hendricks wearing a gorgeous form fitting Carolina Herrera red dress, but I can show my support for heart disease awareness in my own way!
smiling woman
Friday, January 29th, 2010
Something magical happens when a woman wears something she loves, whether it's a great pair of shoes, a tailored blouse, or a treasured necklace. Yes, she looks beautiful, but her smile also glows brighter and her steps become more powerful. While the right clothes and accessories make us lovely on the outside, that transformation is nothing compared to what happens inside.
clothing swap party
Monday, January 25th, 2010
While I have yet to actually attend a clothing swap party, I think the idea is brilliant. It plays on the old adage that one man’s trash is another’s treasure.

Most people go to Hawaii and come back with a tan. Susan O'Brien went to Maui on vacation and came home with a new vocation. She and her husband met Renée Loux, host of the Fine Living network's It's Easy Being Green, who gave Susan a copy of her raw-food cookbook, Living Cuisine: The Art and Spirit of Raw Foods. Susan put her novel aside and by the time she got home had committed to a whole new lifestyle.

If you're always the last one standing at baggage claim waiting for giant bags that require a stevedore to lift, you need help from the little black dress. Packing for the long trip does not require steamer trunks with the packing space of a New York apartment closet.

Yesterday we drove to Dijon. Had a fabulous lunch at La Maison Milliere, a small cafe in a fifteenth century building just behind the Eglise Notre Dame. This was perfect because the famous owl of Dijon, La Chouett, is on that church's north wall. Legend has it that rubbing the owl's stomach with your left hand brings luck and makes your wish come true.

We're staying in Le Richebourg Hotel & Spa just outside Nuit Saint George. It's a very nice place with huge rooms and comfy beds. We're finding that while traveling in early January comes with a few issues, there are some definite advantages.

Today we drove through the lovely towns and villages of the Rhone Valley and into Burgundy. Everything was covered in snow until we reached Macon and then there was nothing at all. It didn't diminish slowly--there was a lot of snow and then none at all.

Dropping off Alex and Erin meant dropping off the monster van. We were sorry to see the kids go, but the relief of seeing the end of that van almost made up for it.

The last full day for Alex and Erin to be with us. We had big plans. Got up early and went to the Saturday morning market. We checked out all the cool stuff they had for sale.
LBD Day 19

Fabulous day touring Avignon. We visited the Pope's Palace and learned more than anyone ever really needs to know about the popes in exile. We had coffee with the truckers in a shady little cafe off the square. Then we went to see the bridge.

This morning early I went over to put money in the car parking meter. As I walked through the town, shops were opening, people were beginning to move around, and it reminded me of the town in Chocolat. We're in the old town which is quaint and small, but it's surrounded by a larger new town with real roads and lots less charm.

We left Nice and Cagnes Sur Mer today and headed west. We started out on the scenic route only to find ourselves up in the hills with roads so tortured that hairpin is too straight to describe them.

We spent the day in Nice. Overcast and cooler than the forecast, it never rained and we had a great time. In the photos the sea and water look very much the same shade, but there's so much beautiful color in the ocean that in person, the difference was clearer.

Shopping bags

Shopping during the holiday season is hectic, to say the least. While Black Friday is known as one of the biggest, and often most profitable, shopping days of the year, the day after Christmas is just as large, but half as lucrative. Working at Nordstrom gave me insight into what these days mean for retailers and shoppers alike.
