wine tasting
Monday, August 16th, 2010
You can drink wine without tasting it and you can taste wine without drinking it.

The sommelier opens the bottle of wine, lays down the cork, pours a taste and waits for your approval. People tell me that this ritual makes them nervous. They don't know how to taste wine: what are they supposed to do with the cork and what if they don't like the wine?

It's hot out there and August 5th is International Beer Day. Wouldn't a tall cold one be great right now?   As you sip, read on to learn about how beer is made and how to pair it with food (or not, in the case of that thirst-quenching, tall cold one).

Fashion gives us lots of choices. With each purchase we choose to be romantic and lacy, bold and bright, tailored and timeless or salty and free spirited. Many of us grope to find a fashion voice that rings true for us. When making financially sound shopping decisions, it's important to distinguish between classics and trends. We have some tips that may help.

Fashion is a classic art form that has the power to transform us. Like our human bodies, it is always changing, slightly elusive, and extremely seductive. It has the potential to express our deeper selves and for me, like many, it has become a religion.
packing lite
Wednesday, May 5th, 2010
What’s the true measure of a happy traveler? Speed and grace. A girl just can’t have fun if she’s weighted down by heavy suitcases bulging with wayward fabrics and uncooperative shoes. The first rule of packing for a trip this season is layering. The second rule is fabric content.

Last week Harriet and I decided to take a little shopping trip to see what kind of deals we could score at Northpark Mall. Before meeting with Harriet, I decided to stop at Buffalo Exchange to sell a few things that I no longer wanted or needed.

When we were younger, we'd punch a hole in a box to watch the image of an eclipse without having to look at the sun directly. It was this concept that led to the development of modern photography.
lists
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010
I love lists. I really do. The top 10 new restaurants or shops in town. The 1,000 places you have to visit in your life time. One of my favorites - the top 100 books everyone needs to read. And if I can take that list and put it in a spreadsheet and compare it to other lists, I'm even happier.
girl in closet
Friday, April 2nd, 2010
A healthy wardrobe helps inspire you to live the life of your dreams, or for those more practically minded, to do what you want to do in life. Managing your wardrobe isn't always easy and unexpected occasions arise that cause style strain if you're not prepared.

Karen Noseff, founder and designer of Fortune Denim Jeans, is a young woman with big plans. And she makes those plans come to life in spectacular ways. She grew up with a love of singing, dancing and art, but her parents urged her to focus on her studies and find a career with security and stability. Though she wanted to perform and design, she ended up in law school.
closet
Saturday, March 13th, 2010
Sometimes it seems we spend forever in our closets staring at possible outfits. A new study reveals that, in fact, we squander almost a year of our lives deciding what to wear. From 14 minutes on weekends to 20 minutes before a big night out, that's a lot of wasted time. We try at least two outfits on average each morning before work. Wouldn't you rather have a leisurely latte?
fortune skinny

People may not remember the origin of blue jeans, but no one can forget James Dean strutting across the big screen sporting jeans, a white t-shirt and black leather jacket in Rebel Without a Cause.  Other heartthrobs such as Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley wearing those sexy denims helped spawn jeans' popularity in the 1950's. After generations of being considered sturdy work clothes worn by factory workers and miners, they became part of the off-duty American wardrobe.  Considered controversial and rebellious, some establishments banned them.
closed fortune cookie
Friday, March 5th, 2010
Yes, it's true. Most experts agree that Fortune Cookies are another great American invention. These thin, crisp cookies, folded so that a slip of paper with a fortune can be placed inside, are probably not even Chinese. There is much debate over the origin of these tiny treats, but in the U.S.A., they have become a staple dessert in Chinese cuisine.

Andrée Putman, the acclaimed French designer and interior architect, once said, "I love America, and I love American women, but there is one thing that deeply shocks me......American closets. I cannot believe one can dress well when you have so much."
levi's
Monday, March 1st, 2010
Most of us think of blue jeans, or denim pants, as truly American. Levi's® certainly are, but denim fabric was used long before 1776.  In the 1600's a cloth called "dungaree" was being made in India, and was imported to Europe by Portuguese sailors who wore pants made from this material while sailing.
